From fame to bankruptcy
Rembrandt's story was one of great success and even greater hardship. During the 1640s, Rembrandt was at the peak of his career. He lived in a lavish home and was a celebrated artist known for his portraits. Yet, despite his fame, he was financially irresponsible, living beyond his means and making poor investments.
His life took a sharp turn with the death of his wife, Saskia, in 1642 and the loss of several important commissions. Unable to recover from these setbacks he declared bankruptcy in 1656, and his lavish home was auctioned off. However, even in this turbulent phase of his life, his creativity continued to flourish. During this period, he produced some of his most groundbreaking works, including self-portraits that reflect his emotional state and struggles, showcasing his resilience and ability to reinvent himself.
